The recent archaeological excavations at Vellalore in Coimbatore have unearthed over 1,000 artifacts in just four months, shedding light on the region's rich historical tapestry. Among the discoveries were shell and glass bangles, iron tools, diverse pottery, and beads, spindle whorls, and terracotta hopscotch markers, all dating back to three distinct periods: the first century BC to the third century AD, the fifth century AD to the 10th century AD, and the 12th century AD to the British period. While carbon dating is pending, the artifacts have been carefully compared to previously carbon-dated findings, providing valuable insights into the ancient trade center's significance.
The excavations, led by Excavation Director K. Suresh, have revealed a British coin among the four copper coins discovered, with the others awaiting verification. This finding aligns with the site's historical importance as an ancient trade hub, previously evidenced by the discovery of Roman coins from the first to the fourth century AD. Mr. Suresh emphasizes that Vellalore was a key node in the ancient trade route connecting the western and eastern coasts, passing through places like Vellalore, Sulur, Kathankanni, Kodumanal, the Chera capital Karur, and the Chola capital Uraiyur.
The public display of artifacts at the Theneeswarar Temple site attracted over 1,500 visitors, including V.K. Baladhandapani, a retired headmaster and author of the book 'Kalanthorum Vellalore.' This excavation not only highlights the historical significance of Vellalore but also underscores the importance of archaeological research in preserving and understanding our past. As the excavations continue until October, the findings will be meticulously documented, offering a deeper understanding of the region's ancient civilizations and their cultural exchanges.
