Penn State University's fraternity system has once again found itself at the center of a scandal, this time involving a cocaine trafficking ring that operated within its walls. The case, which has resulted in 14 charges, highlights the complex relationship between academic institutions and the criminal underworld, particularly when it comes to drug trafficking.
The investigation, led by Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, revealed a sophisticated operation involving current and former students, as well as a father accused of aiding and abetting the crime. The ring was allegedly led by senior fraternity members Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, who made regular trips to Philadelphia and New York to acquire large quantities of cocaine. This drug was then cut, packaged, and sold, primarily within the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses.
What makes this case particularly intriguing is the alleged involvement of pledges in the cutting and packaging of cocaine. According to Attorney General Sunday, this process served as an 'indoctrination' into the fraternities, suggesting a deeper cultural issue within the Greek system at Penn State.
The investigation also uncovered a range of tactics used by law enforcement to track the individuals involved, the methods of drug acquisition, and the sales process. Most payments were made in cash or via payment apps, indicating a level of financial sophistication within the ring.
The charges against the individuals are severe, with Abbatiello, Robinson, Mohammed Hurabi, and Lars Zeepvat facing felony charges, including corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity. Robert Zanolla is charged with felony conspiracy and criminal use of a communication facility, while Paul Robinson, the father of one of the students, is accused of tampering with evidence and hindering the investigation.
The remaining defendants, all student-aged, face misdemeanor counts of possession and paraphernalia. The distribution of cocaine to Penn State students further emphasizes the impact of this operation on the university community.
Penn State's response to the scandal has been swift and comprehensive. The university has placed Delta Upsilon on interim suspension while an investigation is conducted by the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response. Student Affairs will address the charges through individual student conduct processes, and Delta Upsilon will also be reviewed through the University's organizational conduct processes. Sigma Chi, which is not a recognized organization, operates outside of the University's support and oversight.
The University's Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life has also taken steps to address the issue, with health and safety staff working to promote safe behaviors and educate on risk and anti-hazing. However, the scandal raises deeper questions about the role of academic institutions in preventing and addressing drug-related crimes within their communities.
